Our Lamanai Ruins and Baboon Sanctuary Tour is only available here. For the first time ever the ancient city of Lamanai can be combined with other excursions. Travel from Belize City to the village of Lemonal. Here you will have access to bathroom facilitates before you board your boat for your wetland safari tour to the Ancient Mayan Ruins of Lamanai.
When the Spaniards arrived in this area, they found the Maya people still occupying ancient Lamanai (“submerged crocodile”), and found out that this site dated back to pre-classic times – therefore one of the oldest occupied kingdoms of the Maya.
The stone face of a Mayan deity looks mutely to the west on one temple, casting stone eyes on the setting sun. The tour circuit takes guests through other plazas with temples reaching to the heavens – again, a reminder of the cosmological religion of this ancient civilization, which saw the creation of both the short (260 days) and the long count (365 days) calendars a couple thousand years ago by sacred shaman priest/scientists living and working in the rainforests of Meso America.
After your tour we re-board the boat for return to our docks where you will enjoy a delicious local meal. From here we then travel south east to the Community Baboon Sanctuary the only one of its kind. The Sanctuary is home to the Howler monkeys.
The Baboon Sanctuary tour is a true nature-lover’s excursion, as a rainbow of butterflies, birds, and reptiles can be seen while traversing through high grass and thick undergrowth. The most esteemed sighting is undoubtedly that of a family of black howler monkeys casually lounging in an oasis of fruit trees. The animals appear to welcome the spectators as they swing avidly from branch to branch and chatter boisterously among themselves. The booming vocal roar of an adult male serves to alert the pack of the arrival of the tiresome visitors. Photo opportunities are in abundance but undeniably the most priceless keepsake is that everlasting mental portrait and the feeling of absolute freedom and relaxation that is uniquely experienced amidst Belize’s unspoiled wilderness!
There is a minimum number of 4 participants to do this tour.
